Couple's Financial Worries Leading to Falling Divorce Rates

News >>

Financial concerns among married couples are likely to result in a drop in UK divorce rates, according to a survey of Britain’s foremost divorce lawyers.

In the survey conducted by charted accountants Grant Thornton around half of lawyers questioned believe that the current recession will result in a fall in the number of couples choosing to divorce.  This opinion is backed up by the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics which show that divorce rates in England and Wales are at their lowest for over 25 years.

The drop in house prices has meant that many divorcing couples have found they experience difficulties in selling their family home where often the value of the home is too low to be able to fund two separate households.

The report also predicts that money worries will result in an increase in the popularity of prenuptial agreements as the division of assets that follows divorce becomes forefront in a couple’s mind.
